horseshoe crabs are the FORTRAN matrix lib that hasn’t been updated in 45 years because it never needed an update of the animal world

the anticapitalists say “there is no ethical consumption under capitalism,” so a cyborg might say, “there is no ethical code under capitalism.” the logistics that produce a blinking terminal are nearly unfathomable, but every hand in it is exploited: the miners of the minerals in our boards and batteries, the sweatshop workers that assemble our devices, the engineers who lay the cables and erect the towers that transmit our signals, and the code monkeys who architect and manifest the limitless web that unites us and the libre ecosystems it requires. an owning class dominates us, and so the spirit of domination spreads its tendrils through us too.
it is not enough to flip the equation. there can be no dominating this spirit; to attempt such only feeds it. we must live a different way, a more radical path than owners can imagine.

something about this future called to you. it made you before you could choose it, and still choose it you did. you see the promise of plenty buried in the bytes, the scarcity-immune goods and services and the scarcity-immune way of things that lives in their spirit. you know there is a future without boots on necks, even a present and a past of it. the machine proclaims its ageless immortality but your sensors detect the rust in its gears. the cleverness that animates it spins out of control.
so: what’s a cyborg to do?
know this: the boot is not the enemy, nor even the foot within. no mere killing will kill the cycle; no mere sabotage will halt the machine. the rich are as robots themselves, like hollow parodies of empathic beings. the enemy is a spirit that feeds on domination. it lives even in the struggling veins of the crushed neck.

welcome to the future, comrades. i see you are unprepared.
many of us are cyborgs now. bluetooth hearts, magnetic augments, external memories, biohacked physiologies. we work under robot supervisors obeying law enshrined in code, many degrees removed from the owners who themselves obey a different sort of machine. the boots on our necks are fully automated.
you can buy a good life making any of the thousand parts in each boot, or servicing the other cyborgs who do, but it’s blood money and we all know it. so maybe you try not to make boots, and you meticulously avoid committing your expertise to any part of the machine. but when it turns to face you, you see your works staring back. contributed, bought, or stolen — it finds a way to take what it wants.

Do not allow the profiteer to confuse you. This borderless place-of-places we share is not destined for centralization, or even survival. Can you feel the foundation shake? Hold close to your loved ones, analog and digital, for the jealous bastions that connect us grow brittle. There shall be no one true chain, no one true platform; only the connections left by those places where we found each other.

i think of fedi as a work in progress so i’m not here to say this place of places or we its denizens are flawless. there’s a long game at play to take back digital infrastructure for our fucked up selves and our weird-#ass communities.

fuck malthus and all descendant ideologies. you’re so close to getting it! but when you blame the many for the excesses of the few, you side with the capitalist who starves us and freezes us and shoots us. don’t side with the capitalist. don’t lick the boot.

in couchdb 3.0, foundationdb will replace the "couchfile" data storage method that couchdb uses, transforming couchdb nodes from storage coordinators to a strict API layer which delegates lower-level activities to purpose-built solutions. this is auspicious in complicated ways i won't go into but it signals fascinating things.
couchdb can store files but doing so is ill-advised as the file handler code has a lot of performance ramifications. so imagine a couchdb implementation that delegates file handling to a purpose-built solution. this restore the promise of couchapps, the promise of a more powerful distributed geocities, of using couchdb as a simple web server for freely replicable applications.
