For those who are unaware, the #RIAA filed a #DMCA takedown request against #YouTube-DL's #GitHub repo. The claim is that ytdl is primarily used for circumventing copyright enforcement mechanisms.
I don't know where I found this link, but it's important news: #Apple's main #CUPS repository (on #GitHub) has very few commits since the main dev left late last year. There's a new CUPS fork at OpenPrinting.org
I was on the #Pump.io #Github site yesterday and found a wiki page about servers. Not the usual Pump servers, but servers that provide services that most federated socnets generate from each instance.
For example, RagTag\.io was to provide hashtagging for the network. There were statistics hubs, a firehose, a find-your-friends service, and more. The repositories are still there, mostly without being touched for 6-8 years, but the primary service point (such as ofirehose\.com and ragtag\.io are almost universally gone, replaced by domain squatters and the like).
I realize the recent acquisition of #Github by #Microsoft has made many #FOSS devs reluctant to use it. Have there been any changes to the platform since MS bought it that have negatively affected the community? What are concerns about Github's direction going forward under Microsoft? Asking for friends.
@moonman My feelings exactly. I didn't have anything original there ( #Github ) in the first place, but I had patches for others' projects. I removed everything several years ago. Yes, a couple of potential employers have passed on hiring me because my GH account was empty. I just (A) don't want to support centralized facilities like GH or SourceForge any more, when you can host your own #git / #hg / #darcs / fossil; and (B) as my role at work has changed more toward user support, I'm not creating or using such patches any more, so if someone found and started using them, they'd be potentially doing it wrong / importing security holes.
( For a while, I had my own #Fossil repo with some original stuff, but thanks to hosting changes are $EMPLOYER work scheduling / hotel Internet, that's all gone, too. )
I'm out of #college for about a year. I have #CS degree. No jobs so far. Didn't get the highest GPA. No internships. But I think I still like #programming. I did fairly well in my Data Science course (got a B, majority of grade was based on term project). On a different note, I find it hard to focus on projects. I spend more time searching novel projects on #Github than developing my own. I have an interest in #machinelearning, but I feel like there's nothing left to do in that field. As I understand, the models are pretty much fixed, and it's more about acquiring data. I suppose that a PHD might be in the business of developing new models, or evolving existing models, but I'm not at that level, I have a bachelors degree.
For anyone following the diversity questions in our source control management ecosystems, there is some healthy activity in the heptapod development https://heptapod.net/ which is a friendly fork of gitlab with mercurial support
