#universalincome there will be a documentary about it on "arte" a german-french tv station and they say that nixon wanted to implement it back then.

I am so creeped out by leftists fighting for it and not even knowing whose horn they are tooting. universal income can become quite a scary instrument for oppression.

sorry, I don't have a link, it's just something my partner told me whos looking at his facebook ..

@distelfliege when I used birbsite more I was constantly reminding (mostly American) pro UBI activists not to forget some parts of the world (especially Northern Europe) already have well funded public services, and UBI done /wrong/ could easily be used by centre-right/classical liberal types to encourage disruption and privatisation of these public services..

@distelfliege @vfrmedia I think the people arguing for it mean well.

I think it would only work in conjunction with measures such as rent caps, and it would need to be truly unconditional. And some people would still need more support, and they should have it.

@distelfliege @vfrmedia It's a lot more complicated than some proponents make it out to be, and *that* worries me. It might still be simpler and safer than some current welfare systems.

@artsyhonker @distelfliege I'm broadly in favour of it *provided* it is *not* used to reduce existing funding to public health and social care services (or prevent the development of these in countries that do not currently have them), but I'm already noticing the concept being co-opted by the centre right in the UK and elsewhere..

@distelfliege @artsyhonker I can see why USA "liberals" (many of whom are politically closer to CDU/CSU without the Christian bit than a European social democratic party) support it as it *is* better than what they currently have, but in Europe we already have to endure the bad effects of neoliberalism (the Tony Blair era in UK is an example of how this got out of hand..)

@distelfliege @bhtooefr when I was younger and worked in a shop the social benefits were paid with this special form of cheque called a Girocheque (a bank for lower income people which was then run by the Post Office), but it distinctly different to others and had special extra security procedures so using one held up the queue and was akward for the person as they would often be judged by others who were waiting (British people can be nosey)

@distelfliege @bhtooefr it would depend on what the card looks like and that EPOS system isn't capable of distinguishing the benefits cards from any other type of payment card due to unique patterns in the numbering schemes or any other data stored on the chip or mag strip.

Although most Europeans even with low income find it fairly easy to get a current account (although maybe without overdraft facilities) or still prefer to use cash..

@upshotknothole @bhtooefr @distelfliege the Japanese (and some North Europeans) build a lot of tall buildings due to lack of space.

They have problems of their own, vulnerability to extreme weather (earthquakes) and fire (there was recently a bad fire in a tower block in London), and if not constructed well are not pleasant places to live in (I was a pirate radio DJ in London in early 90s and I certainly wouldn't have wanted to live in the block where our studio was!)
